Affiliate series, part 5 | Snapshot of 8 lead gen tactics
The more we write about “not so straight forward” lead generation strategies, the more we recognize that although different, the end result is the same.
Inflated low-quality lists, with little interest in a product or service, over-contacted, distrustful, high churn on any conversions, low LTVs, distorted analytics, high costs, frustrated client facing teams and the list goes on. In this post we will provide a snapshot of lead generation tactics that give an advantage to the affiliate, affecting traffic quality.
If lead generation is your area of expertise and feel like sharing your take, please comment, disagree and correct our message where necessary.
Misleading landing pages:
Twisting an offer or employ bait-and-switch campaigns to collect lead information. Offers are being misrepresented, and value props are not clear.
Doorway and gateway pages:
Creating numerous low-quality, keyword-optimized pages that exist only to funnel users to a single destination URL.
Keyword stuffing:
Overloading web pages or meta tags with irrelevant keywords to artificially boost search rankings, often detaching the content with the lead’s search intent.
Cloaking:
Showing different content to search engine crawlers than what is shown to actual visitors to trick the algorithm into ranking the page for specific terms.
Link schemes and link farms:
Participating in networks created solely for cross-linking or buying backlinks to falsely inflate a site’s perceived authority.
Content scraping and article spinning:
Stealing content from reputable sites or using tools to reword existing articles, to attract a lead and monetize it using other tactics prior to final conversion.
Hidden text and links:
Using CSS or color-matching to hide keywords / links while keeping them visible to search engine bots giving affiliates an advantage.
Comment spamming:
Automatically posting links to a website in the comments section of blogs and forums to build spammy backlinks.
Common responses originating from all of these are “I don’t remember registering”, “where did you get my details”, “I’m not interested”, “But the ad said”, “I registered by accident” or similar. While we advocate for prolonged conversations and value propositions applicable to everyone, an inflated database with low quality leads only serves the affiliate.
It doesn’t serve the marketing team, or the sales/performance team, or the brand, or any ROI metrics. Cheap lead generation ends up costing much more than expensive high-intent traffic, and not just in numbers. Think faster/higher conversion rates, Vs long funnels, hours working on a single lead, low conversion rates, higher acquisition costs.
A healthy pipeline needs it all. Marketing efforts that support sales, a strong message, soft & hard skills, and an anchor who can hold a conversation outside the scope of selling.
